Photography workshop with Claudine Doury in Berlin
Expand your vision while exploring the boundaries between visual reality and fantasy.
When I think about my work, I like to recall Leonard Cohen’s words: “There’s a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in”. This is what we’re going to exercise in this workshop. Claudine Doury
This theory and practice course is designed to lead you in a condensed and well structured way through the process of creating a deep and intense personal essay. With the direct guidance from Claudine Doury and additional assistance from a Workshopx editor, you will learn how to combine your own imagination, interests and obsessions with the natural surroundings in order to produce powerful images and compelling visual stories; from finding and defining your subject, through shooting, to editing and publishing your work.
During the workshop you will shoot your chosen subject, attend a series of lectures, presentations and discussions, and, very importantly, spend time on editing and sequencing your photographs during individual and group sessions in order to produce a final story.

Claudine Doury is a French photographer based in Paris. She’s been a member of Agence Vu since 1991.
Before committing fully to her own photography she worked as a picture editor for Gamma agency, then Contact Press agency in New York and the renowned French daily “Liberation” in Paris.
Her photographic work about adolescence in the former Soviet territories has earned her a collection of top prizes: the Leica Oscar Barnack Prize (1999), a World Press Photo for Nature and Environment Series Award (2000), the Prix Paris-Match (2000), the Prix Nièpce (2004) and the Prix Marc Ladreit de Lacharrière – Académie des Beaux Arts (2017).
She has published 5 books: Peuples de Sibérie, Artek, Loulan Beauty, Sasha, and l’Homme Nouveau.
Claudine’s photographs has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions across Europe and are included in many public and private collections, with the FNAC (Fond National d’Art Contemporain) among them.
She has been teaching photography workshops for several years.
The workshop will focus on the ways fantasy and reality interact in visual storytelling. I will ask you to compose a photo story based on your own vision, fields of interest and obsessions, using the natural surroundings and the spirit of the place. This way you will come a step closer to your own photographic imagery and identity. Claudine Doury.
The first day of the workshop will be dedicated to presenting Claudine Doury’s own work and working method, reviewing your portfolios and defining your shooting assignments for the following days.
During the days 2 and 3 you will combine shooting in the city with attending individual editing sessions, group discussions and further presentations and lectures. A Workshopx editor will be available for pre-editing sessions to help you prepare for the meetings with Claudine Doury and maximize the time spent with her.
You are expected to research your own photographic subject in Berlin (e.g. with help form your local friends) in advance of the workshop. This should be a short story that is accessible, appropriate to your skills and personality and exciting for you. Some help with directions and local contacts may be provided if needed, but you’re expected to fully engage in preparing for and shooting your subject.
The last day of the workshop will be spent on individual and collective editing sessions, during which your photographic story will gain its final shape – the images sequence, the story title, photo captions, a frame for additional text description and publication tips. The final series should at the end be a reflection of your vision, sensitivity and style.
You should arrive with working knowledge of your equipment and ready to shoot. The workshop is limited to digital cameras – during the critique and photo editing sessions we will use electronic equipment only. Having your own laptop is required. You should be able to download, select and export the images to a portable device on your own.
The workshop will be conducted in English.
